Welcome to this week’s update. It includes key updates, ways to share your views, and useful support information for Hertfordshire families.
In this issue:
Staying safe in the heat ☀️
The hot weather is continuing, and many children and young people with SEND may find it hard. This could be because of sensory needs, difficulties managing body temperature, or feeling more tired than usual. Simple things can help, such as keeping water close by, offering cool and quiet spaces for breaks, using fans or cold packs where possible, and helping children pace their activities.
We would like to hear how your children are coping in school or college during the heat, and whether any changes have helped or are still needed. Your feedback helps us understand what is working and what needs to improve – send any thoughts by emailing contact@hertsparentcarers.org.uk or via our feedback form.
Best Start Family Hubs – survey 📝
Best Start Family Hubs are places where families can get support all in one spot — from pregnancy through the early years and beyond. They offer things like stay‑and‑play sessions, parenting advice, health support and help finding childcare. For children with SEND, each hub has trained staff who can spot early needs, guide you through services and make sure you’re linked with the right early years and health support.
Families in Hertfordshire are being asked to share their views on the new Best Start Family Hubs in Watford and Stevenage, and the support offered through the Family Centre Service. The short survey asks what local families need most, so services can be improved. If you can, please take a few minutes to complete the survey and share your views.
Free online workshops for Herts families 💻
Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners (NHS) are offering free online workshops from July to September. They are open to all Hertfordshire families, and you do not need a referral. Topics include emotional literacy, sleep support, self-esteem, resilience, and general emotional wellbeing. There are daytime and evening sessions. You can book here. Families can also watch a recorded webinar and access resources on Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance here.
Expansion of Free School Meals 🍽️
From September 2026, more families will qualify for Free School Meals. Any child in a household receiving Universal Credit (no matter the amount) can apply. It only takes about 5 minutes, and you’ll need your National Insurance number.
You can apply here now. This page also includes information about other support for families who receive free school meals. If your child already gets Free School Meals, you do not need to apply again.
Employment rights for unpaid carers and for parents of seriously ill children 💬
The Government is asking for views on how to improve employment rights for unpaid carers and parents of seriously ill children. This includes looking at whether current support is enough, whether guidance is clear, and what changes could help families balance work and caring responsibilities. We encourage families to share their views before the consultation closes on 1 September 2026.
Could you be the next Chair of HPCI? 🤝
HPCI is looking for an inspiring, values‑led Chair to guide our Board and champion the voices of SEND families across Hertfordshire. If you’re an experienced leader who believes in strong governance, inclusive decision‑making and making a real difference for our community, we’d love to hear from you. Find out more about the role here.
Thanks for reading and, as always, if you have any feedback on this newsletter or Hertfordshire SEND services, you can email contact@hertsparentcarers.org.uk or fill out the short feedback form on our website.
